This has surprised me not because it's happening because I knew Channel 5 were in heavy talks of picking up the show despite its slow decline in popularity on Channel 4, but because it's as early as this year. I fully expected Big Brother to be gone at least 2 years before an attempt at giving a second life to it.
I can't help but think this would have been a smarter move as it would give the public a break and more time to miss it. I watched Big Brother, but watched it casually and I was personally looking forward to a grand return in a few years for everyone to get excited about... I just can't shake the thought that this is being rushed.
So what's the plan? Well now Channel 5 are in complete control of Big Brother, they are planning on broadcasting a 4 week celebrity special in August to kick off the proceedings and word is they are desperate for Charlie Sheen to make an appearance and as funny as this will be and amazing television, good luck trying to get a man who wants millions of dollars per episode of a sitcom. There's every chance he might do it for shits and giggles because he's just that kind of unpredictable guy... hey we can only hope!
It seems Channel 5 have secured a 5 year set deal for the show, so we'll have a fair dose of whatever style Big Brother they cook up in productions.
The celebrity show towards the end of the year will be followed by a more standard of Big Brother 13 week show with members of the public taking part running from September to the end of the year.
